Visa and IBM have announced a partnership to bring payments to more devices in your life through a combination of IBM’s Watson IoT platform and Visa’s global payment technologies.
Harriet Green, IBM Watson General Manager, said the vision is a future of “commerce-based IoT where any device, from a watch, ring, an appliance or car, can be used to make a purchase.”
This collaboration has the potential to make payments much less visible for consumers as barriers around the location of a point-of-sale fall away.
As commerce becomes possible on more connected devices, it will become possible for your running shoes to automatically order a replacement for themselves when they’re worn-out and your washing machine can always ensure that you have detergent on hand. With more devices opening up so many potential opportunities, ensuring that your ecommerce business is ready for the arriving wave of payment-enabled IoT devices will be critical.
