Q1 2017 Ecommerce Sales Reach New Heights

Posted by Origins Ecommerce - June 1, 2017 in

The U.S. Census Bureau has released its quarterly retail ecommerce sales report for Q1 2017. The report, which was adjusted for seasonality, showed that U.S. ecommerce sales topped $105.7 billion in the first quarter of 2017, up 14.7% from the same quarter a year prior.

Over the same yearly period, total retail sales only increased 5.1%, which is what allowed ecommerce to represent 8.5% of total U.S. sales in Q1 2017. Unadjusted, Q1 2017 U.S. ecommerce sales totaled $98.1 billion, which was a decrease of 20.0% from Q4 2016, as expected.

The Census Bureau report findings further illustrates ecommerce’s increasing role in global sales. If ecommerce growth continues at the same rate, it won’t be long before ecommerce represents 10% of U.S. sales.
